‘Vava & Moemoe’
A Diamond Story
Guibert M (1891–1982) aka “Vava” had a small diamond atelier in Kalmthout in the Campine region in greater Antwerp (De Kempen) where the diamond industry was flourishing by the end of the 19th. century. He had a team of 5 craftsmen for cleaving and polishing diamonds. When the crisis hit hard in the 1930’s, he had to let go of his workers, but remained active in the diamond trade.
One of his granddaughters came to UNTOLD with a few pieces of family jewellery, including the diamond earrings she inherited from her grandmother “Moemoe”. She wanted to explore possibilities of how to incorporate these meaningful diamonds which her grandfather had polished into contemporary jewels. We melted the gold and recovered 26 diamonds in total.

The initial idea was to offer a diamond to 10 great grandchildren. We respected this thought by crafting 10 diamond bracelets, Untold Pleasure style, capturing one stone in each piece. With the remaining 16 diamonds we co-created 2 pairs of earrings for her and her daughter in law, in 18k white and yellow gold.
