A natural diamond is estimated to be between 1 and 3.5 billion years old and is literally the oldest and most extraordinary treasure you will ever touch or own. To put that into perspective, our planet itself is approximately 4.5 billion years old.

Diamonds were created at depths of between 150 km and 250 km in the Earth’s mantle under extreme conditions: 75 tons of pressure per square centimetre and temperatures of up to 1,300 degrees Celsius.

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth and can only be cut by another diamond and a rough diamond can lose up to 50% of its weight during the cutting and polishing process

Because of deep volcanic eruptions around 100 million years ago, diamonds made their journey to the Earth’s surface, carried within a volcanic blue rock called kimberlite. Without being insulated in kimberlite, they would have been burned up in the magma.

More than 250 tonnes of rock, sand and debris need to be moved and processed to recover just one carat of rough diamond. Only a small proportion of diamonds reach one carat or more, and only around 20% of mined diamonds are considered suitable for jewellery
