FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a minimum budget for an engagement ring?
A typical engagement ring starts around 5.000 € Tax incl. For a solitaire, the cost of the ring will be primarily determined by the characteristics (4 C’s) of the center stone. In principle, every budget can be discussed since we only make custom-made jewellery.

Do I use gold or platinum?

18 kt gold is used more often than platinum, but both are of course possible. Platinum is harder, more durable and more expensive than gold and takes more effort to craft. One big advantage of platinum is that it will keep it’s white greyish color, whereas white gold needs to be rhodiated in order to keep its sparkle.

What’s the difference between a diamond and a brilliant?

Diamond refers to the raw material, whereas the brilliant is the round shape of cutting a diamond.

The brilliant cut is the most popular cut and was actually invented by Antwerp master cutter Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. He refined the older cuts by using mathematic proportions in order to create maximum brilliance or scintillation.

What does handmade really mean?

The world’s finest jewelry is handmade, one piece at a time. To be considered “Handmade Jewelry” the piece must be fabricated from raw metal by a jewelry artisan, using only tools that are controlled by hand. UNTOLD prides itself that all of the jewellery they create are 100 % handmade in Antwerp. This requires highly skilled labor to manually control tools and to transform precious metals into unique pieces of art. Pure craftsmanship.

In these days of mass production, most of the jewellery however is designed by computer (Computer Aided Designs) and 3D printed into a wax version. The piece will then be casted into a metal of choice (lost wax casting). Since a printed piece of jewellery still requires handwork after being casted in order to finish it, people refer to it as handmade, but is actually not the case.

What are the 4 C’s?

Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged. In 1947, GIA ( Gemological Institute of America) created the 4 C’s for describing diamonds: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight.

Today, the 4Cs of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality and scintillation of any diamond, anywhere in the world. The creation of the Diamond 4Cs meant two very important things: diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language, and diamond customers could now know exactly what they were about to purchase. What is maximum brilliancy?
Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely. We often think of a diamond’s cut as shape (round, heart, oval, marquise, pear), but a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.

GIA ( Gemological Institute of America) determines a cut grade of the round brilliant cut by calculating the proportions that influence the diamond’s face-up appearance and distinguishes 5 grades :

Excellent – Very Good – Good – Fair – Poor

UNTOLD only works with a cut grade of Excellent or Very good which guarantees the best brightness, fire and scintillation of the diamond.

What are synthetic diamonds?
Synthetic diamonds have essentially the same physical and chemical characteristics as natural diamonds, but are produced in a laboratory. Lab-grown diamonds are created in 2-3 weeks time using 2 different methods : High Pressure High Temperature ( HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Lab-grown diamonds are industrially manufactured replicas of natural diamonds and therefore have no inherent value nor resale value.

Synthetic diamond production consumes massive amounts of electricity and the by-product is non degradable industrial waste that cannot be effectively disposed. So, stating that synthetic diamonds are eco-friendly and a green alternative to natural diamonds is inaccurate.

UNTOLD doesn’t promote or sell synthetic diamond products

Do I always need to co-create?

Not at all.
The philosophy of UNTOLD is to always start from the customer and his/her wishes and ideas, how simple or complex they might be. We provide tailormade creative solutions, with an emphasis on diamond knowledge and craftsmanship.

We strongly believe that creating a piece of jewellery should be an experience as such. Weather you go for timeless studs or a designer piece, the experience should always be there.
